Joint Injections

A joint is any area of the body where two bones connect. Due to injury or disease, the space between the two bones can sometimes become swollen and inflamed, which leads to pain and a loss of mobility. Injection and aspiration are two tools that physicians use to treat joint pain locally without needing to perform surgery.

Both injection and aspiration are techniques that involve inserting a needle connected to a syringe directly into the joint. Aspiration involves the removal of excess fluid, and injection is the placement of medication directly into the joint space via the needle. Both procedures may be performed at the same time. In both cases a local anesthetic may be used, the skin will be cleaned and disinfected, and then the needle will be inserted. In some cases, especially if the injection or aspiration is in a large and deep joint such as the hip or spine, ultrasound may be used to guide the needle to the exact location desired.

In some cases, irritation to the joint can cause fluid to build up so significantly that the joint hurts and can no longer move well. Aspiration removes some of the excess fluid and relieves the pressure. In addition, aspiration can be used to provide a sample of joint fluid if it needs to be examined microscopically for the presence of white blood cells, bacteria, or crystal formations.

Certain injuries and diseases that affect joints are inflammatory in nature, such as rheumatoid arthritis, tendonitis or gout. These diseases may be helped by the local injection of anti-inflammatory medications directly into the affected joint. In this case, corticosteroids such as methylprednisone are usually used. Relief from the pain may be felt right away and may last for weeks or even months.

In some cases, such as with osteoarthritis, the cartilage buffer between the two bones wears down and pain comes from bones rubbing against each other. In this case, injection of a lubricating agent such as hyaluronic acid may be beneficial. It provides a slippery cushion between the bones to relieve pain that can last for months.

Lung Issues

Every cell in the body requires oxygen to function and produces carbon dioxide as a waste product. In order to keep the body's tissues constantly supplied with fresh oxygen and to keep waste from building up, the lungs pump air in and out, even while sleeping or unaware. Unfortunately, diseases and disorders affecting the lungs are some of the most common medical problems afflicting people around the world. Some of the most common lung problems include asthma, COPD, pneumonia, and lung cancer.

Asthma is a chronic disease where swollen, inflamed airways make it hard to breathe. It is often brought on by specific triggers. While asthma is a common condition, affecting millions of people, it can also be serious and even fatal in severe cases. Treatment involves avoiding triggers and using inhaled corticosteroid medications.

COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, is the name given to two illnesses that both cause difficulty breathing: emphysema and chronic bronchitis. In emphysema, the air sacs of the lungs become damaged, while with bronchitis they become clogged with mucus. COPD is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. It is almost always caused by breathing irritants into the lungs, such as smoking or heavy pollution.

Pneumonia is a lung infection that can be caused by bacteria, a virus, or fungi. Most healthy people recover from pneumonia in a week or two, but for some people pneumonia can be fatal. There are treatments available for pneumonia, but the best treatment is to prevent getting sick in the first place. People who are at risk should make sure they get a flu shot every year. There is also a vaccine available for the type of bacteria that causes pneumonia.

Lung cancer occurs when abnormal cells inside the lung grow into a tumor, destroying healthy tissue. Because it is so difficult to detect lung cancer in early stages when it has few symptoms, it is the deadliest form of cancer, responsible for the most cancer deaths both in the U.S. and worldwide. Most lung cancer is caused by exposure to tobacco smoke, but between 10-15% of cases are not linked to smoking.

Some problems with the lungs are minor and are not cause for concern. However if symptoms have lasted for a month or more, even if they are minor, it is worth checking with a healthcare professional. A cough, shortness of breath, or excess mucus production that lingers for weeks are all worth getting looked at.

I am writing this for a friend who is older and asked me to tell as many people as possible about how great Dr. Liu is.  She had been looking for a rheumatologist to help with her pain and loss of
range of motion without a lot of pills.  Dr. Liu listened and addressed her loss of range in her neck with targeted treatment to her neck and knees.  She is thankful for the physical therapy, and lifestyle recommendations that also helped her to be active and feel that she has the best doctor ever.  Thank you Dr. Liu for being there and being the best.

Dr Liu is the perfect guy to figure out what's been going on with me. He is the only 1 to take his time & read the test results & go over them with me line for line. I've been chasing these issues for 3yrs, he maybe old in your eyes, to me he is thorough old school, listens to me, my concerns. Like I said he figured out my Issues. He figured out I have several things going on. He needs a raise!! The others I saw were quacks compared to this Doc. Dr Liu is golden in my book& what a doctor should be. There to solve problems the best way he knows how. The old fashioned way! From his experience!!

It is difficult to get a timely appointment with Dr. Wm Liu. However, I was placed on a waiting list and called almost a month before the scheduled appointment. I appreciated that. While it was my first visit, Dr Wm Liu had been my mother's specialist AND my grandmother's. He recalled me from my prior visits for my mother (before her death). We were able to piece together more medical history than most :-)And when he retires, be sure to note he cared for 3 generations of a family. I was hoping not to need his care, but fortunate to have him working on my case.

I could not have anything negative about Dr. William Liu or his staff. Dr. Liu has gone over and beyond to see that my ankle will heal. It's been a month now that I am dealing with ankle pain on my right side. I am not able to place full pressure on my foot. .Doctor has been moderating it. It may be arthritis or that I may have sprained it a second time. He has done all that he can by an x-ray. The hospital did the MRI. Dr. Liu administered a cortisone shot and also checked for gout.

Dr Liu is one of my favorite doctors he diagnosed me with lupus and several other things years back and he went on to another or higher position and I lost him but with prayers and God's will I got him again he is a wonderful doctor and I will tell that to anybody he cares and he shows it he's not phony and he tells you the truth I love my doctor as far as the staff I have never had any problems with them everything has been just beautiful I thank God for my medical caregivers

Dr. William Liu and his staff are Excellent. I have Always had a greeting from his Medical Receptionist the Medical Assistants that record my Vitals as well as accurately recording any new events related to my current health to report to my Dr. Liu. Appointments are arranged to fit my schedule and are done by a caring staff. Dr. Liu listens to his patients and advises, prescribes treatment, medications that are needed to live a successful daily life.

Dr Liu is my guardian angel of lessening painHe is simply the best and most caring doctor I have ever known. HIs knowledge in knowing just what to do is exemplary! I have not known a better doctor in my life. A good doctor, patient and protective of his patients I believe.Would not go anywhere else. He always knows what to do. I cannot say enough for Dr Liu. He is simply the best I have ever had for pain management! God Bless him always!

My provider took time to listen and figure out the best plan for my health concerns. He also took the time to figure out the best route to take with me being a new patient. And he made sure I took x-rays before I left the office and Dr. William Liu made sure he order all the necessary blood work for him to have a better understanding of my health issues...I really appreciated that Dr.Liu didn't dismiss my concerns about my Healthcare.

Dr Liu ALWAYS gives me his full attention during my visits which often can be rather lengthy. I have an unusual condition which at this time has no cure. Dr Liu makes me as physically comfortably as possible. I've been dealing with my illness for over 20 years. Dr Liu is extremely patient and knowledgeable. Please extend the appreciation I have for Dr. Lui as an extremely hard working doctor, because he truly cares about his patients.

Dr Lui is never, never, ever even close to in time. I always schedule the very first appointment of the day. He was 1 hour and 25 minutes late for his FIRST appointment.!! Imagine how late his later appointments will be. To his credit, he doesn't hurry and is very methodical and complete in his evaluation. He spends the time necessary with the patient, but don't plan on getting out for a long span of time after your appointment.
