Replacement Arthroplasty (Joint Replacement)

Joint replacement, sometimes also called arthroplasty, is an option when a joint becomes severely damaged by disease or injury. The damaged cartilage of the joint is surgically removed, the ends of the bones in the joint are resurfaced, and a prosthetic is installed. Most prosthetic joints are made of a metal piece that fits into a plastic sleeve so that they glide smoothly. A joint replacement increases stability in the damaged area and decreases pain. The hip and knee are the two joints most commonly replaced, but joint replacement can also be performed on the ankle, shoulder, elbow and even fingers.

Although joint replacement is one of the safest and most reliable medical procedures available, it is still a major surgical procedure. All surgical procedures carry risks, such as infection or blood clots. For this reason, doctors try to help their patients avoid surgery for as long as they can. Taking arthritis medications, losing weight, avoiding high impact sports such as running, taking supplements such as glucosamine or chondroitin, or having joint injections may allow a patient to enjoy life without the need for surgery.

After having joint replacement surgery, patients can expect some pain the first few days as they recover. Physical therapy is an important part of recovery, and it can decrease complications and increase future mobility. As soon as possible, returning to low impact sports such as swimming, walking or biking can stretch and heal the new joint. A prosthetic joint can last 15 - 20 years and cannot be further damaged by degenerative diseases such as arthritis, so once it is done patients should be pain-free for many years.

Dr. Croy is top of the line! He was thorough and attentive. He entered the room, shook hands, asked who my husband was, explained he had looked at my chart, confirmed what I was there for, explained verbally and with pictures and model what my problem was and gave several solutions, Including the problems that might be Incurred, in my specific situation, then told me to consider them. He suggested a brace in the mean time to help with pain and went over OTC medications and how to use them appropriately. The very next day I received a call from the brace people. I was very satisfied with Dr, Cory's knowledge and service, saw the earnestness of his care in his eyes, which eased my emotional response to my injury. It doesn't get any better than that!

This was my first visit to this provider to see if I need knee replacement, and if I felt comfortable with him doing the surgery. I felt that he explained what is going on with my knee, what to expect from my surgery and recovery. He listened to my concerns and addressed each. He worked me into his schedule even though trays took longer than anticipated, and I did not feel like he rushed through the appointment but took his time to address all my concerns. The provider appeared very knowledgeable and competent, and I feel confident in his ability to perform the surgery.

We need more doctors like Dr Croy he is the absolute best his office staff is fabulous and I can't say a bad thing negative thing about any of them and asking our fact I refer Dr Croy to everyone I know who needs any kind of orthopedic care or has someone or know someone that needs orthopedic care he took care of my husband who's now passed and he takes care of me and he's the best and I think these young doctors should learn from him

Dr Croy was very pleasant and spent a good amount of time explains what would happen during my upcoming surgery. He was very concerned about keeping me healthy and explained in detail the pre op routine. He also in detail let me know what post op would be like. We also talked in detail about pain management. I feel fully informed about pre surgery, surgery, and past surgery. I really appreciate how much time he spent with me.

Dr. Croy is my orthopedic dr, and he is professional while at the same very thorough in the manner with which he addresses my well being. He delineates exactly the steps he feels are best for my care. He also performed surgery on my right shoulder in January, and he helped me feel confident that my course of healing is the best case scenario for me. He's a great doctor.
