Dr. Percy D. Mitchell JR., MD

Have been going here since 2003. This is long, but I've had 13 years with this practice. I'm surprised at the Pediatric Psychiatry as most patients are adults.
Saw Mike Hobson for several years. He did 95% of the talking.  No exaggeration. Rationalized all the crazy things my husband did instead of identifying "gaslighting". Had to figure that out myself. The assumption seems to be that I am delusional when I try to talk about the abusive craziness I am in. They are ignorant about the reality of abuse. They are so naive. 
Haven't seen Dr. Mitchell since 2004 or 2005. Have only seen his Nurse Practitioner. There is no once a year check-in with Dr.  I have evolved and my understanding of my situation has evolved, but it's the nurse practitioner who does the diagnosing and prescribing. ADHD was diagnosed simply by trying Ritalin. Diagnosed! Never asked me if I have a history of irregular heartbeat or any of the other contra indications. I'm sure she's knowledgeable, but she's NOT a psychiatrist. It matters.  Her stock answer to medication issues is "why don't we give it three more months?" Again. And again. And again. She uses a computer program to send prescriptions which takes up half your 15 minutes, so don't expect to be able to actually DISCUSS any issues you're having. There isn't time and she spends most of YOUR time looking at the computer screen rather than paying attention to you. Hello?
The office staff oozes disapproval of the least failure to be perfect. Forgot to call between 9 am and 4:30 pm, 9-2 on Friday, except noon to 1 when they don't answer the phone? Too bad. Leave a message. They might deign to call you back. Sometime. Dripping with disdain. (If you don't have privacy to call outside of lunch hour, forget this place. ) Need a refill? Prescriptions are written on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Period. Forgot to call before Wednesday afternoon? Too bad. You have to wait until next Tuesday. Go ahead and commit suicide. I mean, just because there's something wrong with the functioning of your brain, doesn't excuse you from being precisely professional, punctual, and perfectly prepared. Mental illness is no excuse!

They did finally get rid of their prescription refill hotline, where you leave a detailed message of name, medication, dosage, frequency, pharmacy, etc. They won't call to let you know it's ready, or to clarify information. I have been told that they have no record of my call. I've had the wrong medications called to the wrong pharmacy. Not once. Not occasionally. Every other time. Sometimes twice in a row. No apology. No correction. No medicine. It MUST be your error since they're perfect. You have to wait until next Tuesday. Have a manic episode or a psychotic break and end up jailed or hospitalized. Climb in the tub and cut your wrists. Totally fail at work and get fired/demoted because you have an assignment due and you don't have your ADHD meds because THEY screwed up. Their attitude: "Screw YOU!"

The office staff needs to do some serious reflecting on why they chose to work in the health care field. If they think dealing with less than perfect, messy people whose lives "happen" in less than perfect precision is beneath them, they are in the wrong field. The entire practice needs to reflect on why they would leave people who are often walking a thin edge between hope and despair out in the cold. 
Obviously, I'm looking for a new doctor. We've had a very limited number of psychiatrists available on our old insurance carrier. I'm hoping to find someone now that we have a new company. It's hard to find someone competent who accepts your insurance and is  accepting new patients and will agree to see you. (And I am very polite. None of the above behavior on their part is the result of me being rude, unreasonable, or disrespectful.)
