Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ)

TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint, the little round joint that lies in front of the ear between the temporal bone ( the cheek bone) and the mandible (the lower jaw.) Often people use the acronym 'TMJ' to refer to temporomandibular joint dysfunction or disorder - that is, pain and stiffness in this joint and the muscles around it.

TMJ can cause a wide variety of symptoms related to the movement of the jaw. They can include earaches, headaches, an inability to open the mouth very far, painful clicking or popping noises when chewing or talking, and stiffness or pain in the jaw, face, or neck. Sometimes TMJ symptoms seem to go in cycles, getting better or going away for a while only to come back again. Symptoms can be mild and not very bothersome, or so persistent and painful as to be almost debilitating.

There can be many potential causes of TMJ. An injury or trauma to the jaw, arthritis, or grinding the teeth can all contribute to TMJ. The temporomandibular joint contains a small disc of cartilage that allows it to move smoothly, and this disc can become dislocated or torn. Sometimes the cause is unknown. There are no standard tests for TMJ, and it can be difficult to diagnose and treat.

Mild cases of TMJ may benefit from self-care such as eating soft foods, practicing stress management techniques, and applying ice packs to the jaw. NSAIDS, such as ibuprofen, can be purchased without a prescription and work to reduce pain and inflammation. Some dentists and occupational therapists can suggest stretching techniques for the jaw which may help relieve stiffness. More serious cases may require a form of splinting called a stabilization splint or bite plate, which helps reduce pressure on the joint. Extreme cases may benefit from arthroscopic surgery on the joint.

I have been going to Dr Yavari Rad due to ongoing back pain after a car accident. In the 5 years of treatment, he has always listened well, given thought to my issues and concerns, and provided useful information, suggestions or options to address my pain. His knowledge and receptiveness to listening to my concerns is very appreciated since I'd spent the 5 years prior trying to find a doctor who would actually listen to the issue, identify the problem, and provide effective treatment. Although the SI joint issue needs ongoing treatment, it was a huge a relief when Dr Yavari Rad identified it and takes the time to help me address the problem.

I researched my Dr. Before I saw him even though he was recommended by my physical therapist. He is rated one of the best in Olympia, Washington. I thought because of that it would be hard to get in to see him and backlogged for appointment. But not so. I got an appointment right away, he listened, and I got in x-rays just walked right down the hallway no 23 weeks out for that so I got everything done and I got an appointment a week two for the shot. I am very very happy with him. He's thorough and he listens and you get in really good decent time no long waits with him

Dr. Yavari is one of the most caring and pleasant doctors I have ever seen. During my procedure in Feb I asked him if he enjoyed what he does and he laughed, said yes, and asked me why I queried him. I told him that his manner and professionalism gave him awayI just wanted him to know it shows! I wouldn't see him for no reason, but I look forward to seeing him when I must!

Dr Yavari Rad takes all the necessary time to help me with my medical problems related to his specialty. All too often it is difficult to get a doctor to listen to the symptoms and/or difficulties I am having. Dr. Yavari spends the time to listen and consider these things to help him reach a treatment plan for me. I truly appreciate this.

Everyone at this clinic was pleasant and courteous. I was seen very quickly, and the doctor was exceptionally caring, easy to understand and helpful. He answered all my questions, and he actually was going through all of my records and reports from labs, x-rays and MRIs while we talked - explaining what he saw and what it meant.

Dr. Rad performed a nerve conduction and EMG test (I have significant L5/S1 radiculopathy and neuropathy). He was extremely professional and informative throughout. The staff was helpful and friendly. I would have preferred an earlier appointment, but I'm getting used to long waits for medical care.....apparently it's the norm.

Dr. Ybari Rad asked a lot of relevant questions and paid close attention to my answers. He did a thorough physical evaluation of symptoms. The provided an excellent explanation of my MRI imaging data. He answered all of my questions. He gave me complete confidence in the standard of care he delivered.

I see Providence for numerous services, and always receive great care. The staff is friendly and professional, and the doctors are very knowledgeable. My only complaint is that the last couple of times that I needed to have paperwork routed, there was a delay, which caused delays to my care.

I was empress with the doctor who explained everything to me in great detail. I always knew I had a problem, but he sat there showed me what, way, where and how my lower back was hurting at times. Was awesome to have him explained that to me were I understand it. So cool. I like his style..

Dr. Yvari Rad truly listened to my issues. He was attentive to both of the issues causing pain and worked with me to create a plan of care that I am hopefully will truly address the severe pain I have been experiencing. I felt listened to and hopeful for the first time in a long while.
