Autoimmune Diseases

An autoimmune disorder happens when the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues of its own body, causing symptoms of illness. There are more than 80 different types of autoimmune disorders. While some are very rare, others are fairly common. Combined, autoimmune disorders are one of the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, affecting approximately 24 million people.

A properly working immune system identifies foreign substances in the body that might cause illness, such as bacteria and viruses. The immune system then creates antibodies which attack the foreign substances, neutralizing them and keeping the body safe. In people with autoimmune disorders, something goes wrong with this process. For reasons that are not fully understand, the immune system creates antibodies to attack the patient's own tissues.

Symptoms of an autoimmune disorder depend on which tissue is being attacked by the immune system, but common symptoms of autoimmune disease include fever, fatigue, and a general feeling of just not being well. Autoimmune disorders are more common in women than in men, and they may run in families. Autoimmune disorders can affect various parts of the body such as blood vessels, connective tissue, endocrine glands, joints, muscles, red blood cells, skin, and many others.

It is common to have more than one autoimmune disorder at a time. Most are chronic, or life-long illnesses, although they may come and go in flares. Treatment for autoimmune disorders depends on which part of the body is being attacked. For example:

A type 1 diabetic whose pancreas has been damaged will need insulin.
A person with Hashimoto's whose thyroid has been damaged will need replacement thyroid hormones.
Someone with Sjogren's syndrome will need eye drops and mouth rinses to replace tears and saliva.

Many autoimmune disorders of all kinds are treated with immune-suppressing medications, such as corticosteroids (e.g. prednisone) to reduce the effect of the immune system.

Heart Attack

A heart attack is a serious medical event that happens when the blood supplying oxygen to the heart is cut off, usually because of a blockage in an artery. This results in damage or death of part of the heart muscle. The heart can heal, but like any part of the body that was injured it leaves a scar. This scar tissue does not contract effectively, so the ability of the heart to pump is lowered after a heart attack.

A heart attack, sometimes called a myocardial infarction, can happen without warning. However there are certain factors that raise the risk of heart attack. Some of these are:

Age
Gender (most heart attack sufferers are male)
A family history of heart attacks
Smoking
Obesity
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Unhealthy lifestyle choices (lack of exercise, poor diet, too much alcohol or stress)

Heart attacks typically feel like pain or pressure in the chest that can radiate out to the back, arm, or jaw. Some other symptoms can include fatigue or weakness, shortness of breath, sweating, and nausea.

Treatment aims to increase blood flow to the heart muscle by opening up blocked blood vessels. Medications are sometimes used to dissolve clots in the arteries. Aspirin and other medications such as Plavix can thin the blood and make clots less likely to form. Dilators can widen blood vessels to make room for more blood to flow. Doctors can also use a procedure called catheterization to look at the blood vessels around the heart directly, place stents, or widen vessels using angioplasty. In extreme cases bypass surgery can be used to help blood flow better. After recovery, it is important to lead a healthy lifestyle and take any prescribed medications in order to protect the heart.

Heart Problems

The heart is one of the most important organs in the body. This smooth muscle expands and contracts rhythmically an entire lifetime, pumping blood to the lungs and then to every other cell in the body. When heart problems occur, it becomes difficult for the body to get the nutrients and oxygen it needs via the blood. So while there are a variety of illnesses and disorders that affect the heart, most of them cause weakness, exhaustion and shortness of breath. The most common heart conditions include heart disease, angina, arrhythmia, and valve disorders.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States for both men and women. This includes coronary artery disease, heart attacks, congestive heart failure, and congenital heart disease. Some conditions, such as genetics, cannot be controlled. But there are many other things one can do to lower their risk for heart disease. Controlling high blood pressure and cholesterol levels, reducing or stopping smoking, exercising more and losing weight if needed, and eating a diet low in sodium can all protect the heart.

Angina is a squeezing type of chest pain that happens when the muscles around the heart don't get enough oxygen. It can be regular or infrequent. Usually, angina is caused by coronary heart disease. However, not all chest pain is angina. Chest pain can also be caused by a lung infection or panic attack, for example, so it is important to have any sudden pain checked.

Arrhythmia is the word for when the heart beats too fast, too slow, or irregularly with skipped beats. It can feel frightening, and depending on the type it can be dangerous, but in most cases arrhythmia is not serious and can be treated. It is very common, especially in older adults.

Heart valve problems can happen in any one of the the heart's four valves that keep blood flowing where it needs to go. Babies can be born with problems in their heart valves, or valves can be damaged by infections. The valves can stiffen and become less mobile, or they can stop closing properly and 'leak' when the heart beats. Valve problems can usually be repaired surgically.

Dr Woolf is a knowledgeable individual who likes to get the big picture. He is "no nonsense" about, diagnoses, treatment and medications, but displays a great sense of humor with this patient. He is very quick to respond to communications whether for guidance or scrip refills or problems and his responses to questions are always straightforward, regardless of the tenor of his message. He does not evade tough questions and always explains WHY he wants tests, is changing a dosage or wants me to change something I do that is not in the best interest of my cardio health. Dr. Woolf is "out of my insurance network" and there are many cardiologists IN my network. I'm staying put until he moves on or throws me out. I trust him completely and his tratment of my complex of medical conditions has been excellent.

My appointment with Dr. Woolf was for a routine 6 months exam/discussion. Generally we have have plenty of time to cover all topics regarding my heart health. But my general health has deteriorated greatly in the last six months so it would have been nice if we would have had a few more minutes of discussion. I greatly value Dr. Woolf's knowledge and advice on how my many other problems interact with my heart health. He did address them all but I'm old now and it takes me longer to absorb new input. I guess it would be impossible to know which appointments need extra time when scheduling six months in advance. I realize it is important for every doctor to stay on schedule so the next patient is seen on time and receives their appropriate "doctor face time". Thanks for this opportunity in comment.

I was able to get an appointment with Dr. Woolf the day after calling scheduling. My appointment started on time. The staff who greeted me and took my vitals were courteous and personable. Dr. Woolf listened carefully to my concerns, examined me, and talked over the tests I had previously for my health issues. After this we discussed what he thought was happening with my issues and recommended a test to further evaluate my symptoms. Dr. Woolf was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and kind. He shared personal connections that he had with where I lived before moving to the area. I would not hesitate to see him again. I also plan to recommend him to any of my family or friends who may be having cardiac issues. It was a pleasure to work with him and his staff.

Dr. Woolf is the cardiologist treating my heart condition. During an appt, they always do an EKG which takes more than 15 minutes but it helps him understand how my heart is functioning in addition to the echocardiogram that I had a couple of weeks before the appt. Dr. Woolf is thorough, direct but kind when dealing with me. He doesn't sugarcoat what's going on including potential next steps referring me an electrophysiologist who are experts in afib. I can't imagine going anywhere else for my heart needs.

Dr. Woolf showed interest in my situation. He asked me questions, listened to me very carefully, and answered my questions in a very clear and simple way. He even asked me, after my visit, to send him an image of a test I got done out of the US; he reviewed it and gave me his take on. This was very valuable for me, and I'm very grateful for that. He is the best cardiologist!

Thank goodness Dr Woolf could see me he had a cancelation and I just happened to cal. Your heart health doctors are booked two months out at the east side clinics. Referrals and NST orders take up to two weeks. Frankly that's too long when a patient learns of a serious heart condition. I appreciate Dr Woolf very much and grateful for the timing of his cancellation

Staff was extremely patient, considerate, and compassionate. Dr. Woolf was thoroughly prepared and knew my history and medication lists. He explained all the ramifications of current and potential procedures/ medications. He was not rushed and explained everything and answered all of my questions and concerns.
