Depression

Everyone knows what it feels like to get the blues once in a while. But depression is a serious illness that is more severe than a bad day and lasts much longer. Symptoms of depression stop a person from being able to function and enjoy daily activities for weeks or months at a time. It can happen to anyone, and it isn't something that people can control by force of will or "snap out of it."

Some common symptoms of depression include:

Feeling sad, guilty, empty or hopeless
Fatigue and a lack of energy and motivation
A loss of pleasure in activities that were previously enjoyed
Unusual sleep or eating habits
Mental fog -- trouble concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
Physical aches and pains
Suicidal thoughts or a preoccupation with death

We don't yet know what causes depression, but it's thought that it is a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and social influences. Because of this, the most effective treatments for depression combine medication with psychotherapy. Therapy, especially cognitive-behavioral therapy, can be extremely helpful in resolving the negative thoughts and feelings that come with depression. It gives patients new tools that they can use themselves to cope when their depression is making them feel down.

Some of the common medications used to treat depression include antidepressants such as SSRI's (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft) or atypical antidepressants (Cymbalta, Wellbutrin). It's important to remember that these medications have different effects on everybody, and no one medication works right for everyone. Patients may have to try a couple before finding the one that works just right for them. If the first medication they try doesn't work, they should talk to their doctor about trying something else. In extreme cases where medication is not enough, electro-convulsive therapy and hospitalization may be the answer to keeping a severely depressed person safe.

Depression is a difficult illness to deal with, but it is more common than believed and there are many people who can help. With the right treatment, individuals with depression can get back to fully enjoying life again.

Mental Health Issues

Mental health issues, also referred to as mental health disorders or mental health illnesses, are a wide variety of conditions that impact behavior, emotion, and cognition. There are many different forms of mental health issues, some of which are acute (short-term), while others are chronic. Common mental health issues include:

Anxiety disorders, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, and phobias
Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder
Eating disorders, such as anorexia and bulimia
Personality disorders, such as borderline and narcissistic personality disorders
Grief and trauma, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
Impulse control and addiction disorders
Psychotic disorders, such as schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder

No single cause of mental health issues exists. Multiple factors may increase one's risk for developing mental health issues, including but not limited to:

Genetic history
Chemical imbalances in the brain
Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
Substance use
Exposure to viruses, chemicals, or other substances in the womb
Adverse life experiences, such as childhood trauma or recurring stress
Isolation and poor living conditions

Mental health issues are typically diagnosed by a provider like a psychiatrist or a psychologist. These issues are diagnosed through psychological evaluation and talk therapy.

Mental health therapy can be an effective tool in supporting people who are struggling with unwanted feelings, behaviors, or difficult circumstances in their lives. Many forms of therapy are available, including specialized therapies tailored to particular disorders. For many issues, therapists help patients manage their conditions through talk therapy. Other treatments can include medication or stays at a psychiatric facility. Mental health therapy can help people with mental health issues improve their mental and emotional wellbeing.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

A urinary tract infection, or UTI, happens when bacteria enter the body through the opening where urine is normally released. The bacteria infect the lining of the urethra and bladder, turning them red and inflamed. This causes pain in the abdomen or pelvic area, a burning sensation during urination, a sense of urgency about going to the bathroom, frequent urination, and urine that smells bad and looks cloudy, or even contains traces of blood. If the urinary tract infection is severe, it may travel all the way to the kidneys, a more serious kind of UTI called pyelonephritis. Patients with this kidney infection might have blood in their urine, feel back pain, and develop a fever.

Urinary tract infections are extremely common: 12% of all men and 40-50% of all women will have a urinary tract infection during their lifetime. They are more common in women because women have shorter urethras, so bacteria have a shorter distance to travel from the outside of the body to the bladder and cause an infection. Some people also have urethras that are an unusual shape or have an obstruction in the urethra that makes getting a UTI more likely. Also, certain chronic illnesses like diabetes weaken the immune system, so any bacteria in the body are more likely to cause an infection.

A urinary tract infection can be diagnosed very quickly by a doctor. A sample of urine can be examined under a microscope for the presence of bacteria or white blood cells. There are also diagnostic strips that can be used to test a urine sample without the need for a microscope. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment is a course of oral antibiotics, and most patients feel better within just a few days. There are some things that patients can do themselves to help reduce the risk of getting a urinary tract infection in the future. Stay well hydrated, wipe from front to back after going to the bathroom, wear breathable cotton undergarments, and don't hold it in when patients feel the urge to go.

I’ve been to Dr. Turner twice. He’s a very nice guy - very chatty and likes to tell jokes, but when it comes to the actual doctoring … ugh! I’ve come to the conclusion that the only thing he will actually diagnose/treat is high blood pressure. Absolutely EVERYTHING else he refers to a specialist. My insurance only covers specialists at 50%, so it gets expensive having to pay to go to Dr. Turner only to have him dole me out to someone else. I had traumatized my big toes on both feet due to wearing shoes that were too small. I had asked him to take a look at them and see if there was something I could do. The man wouldn’t even look down at my open toed shoes, he just immediately said “go to a podiatrist”. As of right now, I can’t even get his office to refill my blood pressure medicine, so I guess even that he’s no good at. I think it may be due to a $14 balance I have, which of course i need to pay, because I’m sure it will help in financing his next trip to Europe because both times I’ve visited him, he was about to leave for grand trips abroad. I can’t with this guy.

His clinical interests state diabetes management. HA!!! He referred me out for my diabetes, too. Don’t be fooled by this “doctor”.

If you are looking for a provider who prioritizes the needs of his patients - AVOID Dr. Turner.  For 3 month follow up appointments to review medications, he will not schedule routine blood tests prior to the appointment so as a patient there is not an option to discuss blood work and care plan and if there are any additional steps to take to improve care.  Instead his process is to go in for 3 month follow up, where there is cursory check of vitals and "how's it going" conversation.  Then he orders blood work and after results come in the nurse gives a perfunctory phone call saying watch these levels, or this was too high.  To actually review results with doctor a follow up to the follow up has to be scheduled.  Never before have I had a doctor that would not issues orders for blood work before the follow up.  Don't bother trying to call to get orders, his rude office staff will just repeat "the doctor won't do that".  The standard of care provided by Dr. Turner and staff is poor at best.
