Anemia

Anemia is the most common blood disorder. It occurs when the body does not have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the tissues. Blood loss, insufficient red blood cell production, and red blood cell destruction are the three main causes of anemia. These issues may arise from such conditions as iron deficiency, heavy periods, ulcers, kidney disease, as well as some forms of cancer.

An individual with anemia will have the following symptoms: shortness of breath, weakness, dizziness, cold hands or feet, paleness, and irritability. Anemia is diagnosed when blood tests show low counts for hemoglobin, which is the protein responsible for carrying oxygen to different tissues throughout the body.

Treatments for anemia are dependent on the kind of anemia an individual has. For example, iron supplementation may correct iron deficiency anemia. For anemia caused by chronic kidney failure, chemotherapy treatments, and HIV/AIDS, a group of medications called erythropoiesis-stimulating agents may be prescribed.

Musculoskeletal Problems

The musculoskeletal system refers collectively to the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and nerves. It is what gives the body structure and movement. Because this system encompasses so much of the body, musculoskeletal problems are extremely varied and can happen almost anywhere. There are musculoskeletal problems that affect only the joints, those that affect the bones, those that affect tendons and ligaments, and those that can happen in any area of the body but cause pain and numbness.

Joint problems include bursitis and arthritis. Bursitis is the inflammation of a fluid-filled sac cushion on the outside of a joint, causing symptoms including pain and swelling. Arthritis is the inflammation and damage of a joint due to wear and tear or disease. There are several treatments for arthritis, but if the damage progresses far enough, joint replacement may be necessary. In joint replacement, a metal or plastic implant is surgically placed within the joint to make movement easier.

Bone problems include scoliosis, fractures, and osteoporosis. Scoliosis is a curvature of the spine, making the normally straight spine look like a 'C' or 'S.' It is treated with braces or surgery. Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to weaken and break easily. It's most common in women, especially older women. Fully half of all women over 65 have osteoporosis. Fractures are any break in the bone. They can be a simple crack or a severe and complicated shatter. Osteoporosis causes fractures in people who have it, but other causes are trauma (such as a fall) or overuse.

Tendon and ligament problems most often result from injury or overuse. Two good examples are ligament tears and tendonitis. The most common ligament tear is the ACL tear in the knee. This ligament supports and stabilizes the knee and is most often torn during sports activities. Tendonitis happens when a tendon, which connects muscles and bones together, becomes irritated and inflamed. This happens most often in older patients who push their bodies too far, leading to pain and swelling. Treatment for both tendon and ligament problems usually includes rest, ice, and supporting the area to let it heal.

Pain and numbness problems can be caused by overuse, disease, an injury, or a compressed nerve. Lower back pain and carpal tunnel syndrome are two of the most common conditions patients encounter. Lower back pain may be caused by sore muscles that have been overworked, or an injury to the disks separating the vertebrae in the spine. Lower back pain usually goes away on its own within a few days, but it may require medical treatment depending on the cause. Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the nerve at the base of the palm becomes trapped or pinched. Symptoms include tingling, pain, numbness, or weakness in the hand. Treatment involves rest and sometimes steroid injections.

Because the musculoskeletal system involves so much of the body, problems here can be incredibly varied in their type and severity. Some musculoskeletal problems will go away on their own or only require rest, while others may require medication, physical therapy, or even surgery.

Thrombocytopenia (Low Platelet Count)

Thrombocytopenia is a disorder where people have too few platelets. With too few platelets in the bloodstream, the blood is unable to properly clot. People with thrombocytopenia may experience prolonged external and internal bleeding. Large purple bruises (ecchymoses) and small red skin spots (petechiae) in the skin and mouth are common in those with thrombocytopenia. Other symptoms of the disorder include bleeding gums, blood in bodily fluids, and fatigue. Thrombocytopenia most often arises from a different condition or treatment, such as alcoholism, autoimmune disease, cancer treatments, viruses (such as Hepatitis C and HIV), bone marrow diseases (such as leukemia and aplastic anemia), enlarged spleen, and exposure to toxic chemicals. In rare cases, thrombocytopenia is inherited.

If a doctor suspects a patient has a thrombocytopenia, a complete blood count (CBC) or platelet count test helps determine the concentration of platelets in a person's blood at a given time. Thrombocytopenia can be diagnosed by hematologists using advanced tests on platelet samples. Flow cytometry tests detect abnormalities by evaluating the characteristics of a platelet sample using targeted lasers and lights.

Treatments for low platelet counts include steroids like Prednisone, that can assist with platelet production. If a patient's low platelet count is caused by spleen problems, spleen removal (splenectomy) may be recommended. To treat the prolonged bleeding caused by thrombocytopenia, doctors frequently prescribe Dempressin, a hormone that promotes blood clotting. Antifibrinolytic medications such as tranexamic acid may also aid in the promotion of clotting and the prevention of bleeding. For patients with severe platelet disorders (either low platelet count and dysfunctional platelets), blood transfusions may be prescribed. Platelet blood transfusions deliver donated platelets to patients intravenously, replenishing the volume of functioning platelets.

Patients can also modify their lifestyle to better manage their disorder and minimize complications. Patients with low blood counts should avoid blood-thinning medications, alcohol, and activities that could lead to injury. Many people with thrombocytopenia can live healthy and fulfilling lives with proper treatment and precautions.

Dr Byrd is my oncologist. He is an excellent doctor. He came highly recommended by physicians in our area. One even noted if he needed an oncologist he would go to Dr. Byrd. The physician said he was extremely smart, excellent oncologist with an excellent reputation among his peers. The physician who said that about Dr Byrd was a surgeon and also worked in both ED and. OB GYN before. Dr. Byrd has worked to help me get through some difficult times with my cancer. He is caring, listens to my issues and is extremely supportive. Always responds to my questions when needed, and always is honest but gives me hope. I am grateful to have him as my oncologist.

I am a Dr. Byrds cancer patient. He is very good and I recommend him highly. He is very professional, thoughtful and honest about my cancer. I appreciate it. He never tries to coverup any issues I have. He answers every question I have and then some. He works very hard with his scheduler to meet my time needs when scheduling CT scans and other labs. Daniel Byrd is my Oncology doctor. We have been meeting every 4 months as follow up to my immunotherapy treatment that was completed in Feb. Prior to our visit, he orders a CAT scan and goes over the results from that test at our meeting. The prognosis after kidney CA and immunotherapy has been positive and my visits will now take place on a 6 months interval. Dr Byrd is easy to talk to and I feel comfortable discussing my health concerns with him even if they are not necessarily oncology related.

The Provider I had seen almost annually for anemia had moved. I had been impressed with Dr. Byrd when he saw me a couple of times in the hospital for cancer in 2015. I doubt he has room for many more patients at the Providence office where I saw him. (Only Friday mornings.) But he had a wonderful way of synthesizing everything under a central theme -- inflammation. And he extricate me from a longstanding prescription that made me uncomfortable.

Daniel Byrd is my oncology doctor and as I have finished a years worth of Kaytruda immunotherapy this visit was a review of those results and if I had any concerns or side effects. He will refer me for a CAT scan in 4 months and we will again have a consult and reiview this information. He assured me we will have a continuation of these visits for some time. I dont mind; he has been a very fine Doctor during this experience.

My provider and his team are the best. They all treat you with utmost respect especially with my care provider. He is very professional in his dealings but makes you feel welcomed and gives his best. He always gives his best and helps you with the health problems you encounter. To me, Dr. Byrd is a blessing from God. He is very smart and very knowledgeable about the disease he is treating. To me, he is my lifeline!

Dr Byrd saved my life! I know others also played hands in that, but he is the only constant as far as cancer health that I have. He calms my anxiety and fears about cancer coming back. Of course he doesn't have a magic ball, but just the way he explains the things to me and listens to me helps put my mind to ease. Dr Byrd is an amazing oncologist and I am so grateful he is my oncologist!!!!!

There have been no "bad" experiences at Oncology/ Dr Byrds office. From the front desk to the lab to Dr Byrd and Oncology Pods. I am going through chemo as well as taking my sister with stage 4 Breast Cancer through the experience with me. They have tried very hard to keep our appointments together- as to save trips. I think I can safely say that she would totally agree with all my answers!

There currently have been no negative experiences at Providence. I have observed that my care providers office is highly organized, efficient and appears to run like a "well oiled machine "! I'm extremely impressed with the care and compassion. They always keep you in the loop- if changes come up - they make sure that you understand as you go along in the journey. All questions answered.

Dr. Byrd is my Oncologist. He is a great doctor. He is straight and honest. He answers uncomfortable questions I may have with respect and compassion. It's hard having cancer yet hey is reassuring with the steps I need to take for treatments. He is quick to answer any questions I may have. I appreciate his frankness and fairness. I would highly recommend him to others in my situation.
