"I had a horrible experience with one of the dr. Katarzyna Brodowskain. This past Thursday when I arrived at the office at 11am for 11: 20am appointment, the waiting room was full and only one dr. was working. I have a stage 4 cancer and bleedings in the back of her eyes and I was placed in cold dark room for over 2h. Being promised that dr. would see me soon. She kept taking all patients that showed up after me but made me weight because I was a new patient, which she verbally stated. I was late to take my pills and felt very uncomfortable in the dark cold room for so long. I even cried because I felt so powerless. After 2h The nurse finally texted dr, Brodowska and she showed up 15min later. When I told Dr. Brodowska that how they treat new patients is absolutely unprofessional and disrespectful she wasn't even apologetic. She gave me all 5min of her time and couldn't wait for me to leave. Unfortunately you are not a patient at Retina Institute of Illinois - you are just a $$$. They put as many patient as possible in one day which is disrespectful to patients and staff. "

What are Vitreoretinal Diseases?

Vitreoretinal disease, or vitreoretinal surgery, is a subspecialty of ophthalmology that focuses on the surgical care of the back of the eye, or the retina. The retina is the layer of nerve tissue at the rear of the eye that senses light and is responsible for vision. Connected to the retina is a thick, clear gel called vitreous. In order to perform surgery on the retina, the vitreous must sometimes be removed. Doctors who can operate on these incredibly delicate parts of the eye are called vitreoretinal surgeons.

Some of the eye conditions that a vitreoretinal surgeon might treat include:

Diabetic retinopathy
Macular degeneration
Retinal detachment or tears
Macular holes
Retinal vein occlusion
Retinoblastomas

During vitreoretinal surgery, small incisions are made in the white of the eye, and very tiny instruments are inserted. The surgeon uses a microscope to treat the areas needed deep within the eye. In some procedures, a gas bubble is injected into the eye to apply pressure to the retina and keep it in place while it heals. If this is the case, you may be asked to lie face down for a few days after surgery. Eye drops containing antibiotics and other medications are also commonly prescribed.
